Most of us have been told that reading will improve our English as well as our writing. This has been reiterated since we were in Primary School. We have also been told that copying from one source is plagiarism but copying from many sources is research. So, by reading more, we are constantly widening our vocabulary and improving our grammar and punctuation. We can also take note of what techniques the writers use. What’s more, reading materials are very common. We can get books from the library and newspapers from home. These can be used as our reading materials. So in a nutshell, reading is the best way to improve our Paper 1 Free Writing.
I think that the most easiest way to improve on your free-writing is by reading story books.This is because you can see how they write their story and if you like it alot,you can copy their style of writing and use it on your essay too.otherwise , you can read the dictionary daily to find those words with deep-meanings and use it on your essay too.you could also read more newspapers daily as the words used in it sometimes are very good too.Otherwise,watching the news at night is a good way to improve your grammar too as the subtitles can contain some very good words too. I think there are many ways to improve on our Paper 1 Free Writing, which includes what many people will most probably say: reading more English books and those essays that are recommended. They are definitely helpful because if we read stuff that are very literary, we'll start to include words or phrases we remember in our daily lives, starting first by speaking them. We'll also start writing them because we would slowly find that it is a natural instinct to do so. However, I also think that the best way to improve on our Paper 1 Free Writing is to love writing. In my opinion the best way to improve English is to use it as much as possible. Whether it be reading or speaking, we are practising the language subconsciously. Also, we must learn not to detest English just because we cannot ace it. If we were to despise the very language we speak, we are refusing to learn it and hence, are unable to expand our knowledge. Reading is important and the best to read are articles. They are short, use a wide range of vocabulary and phrases that we barely know and broaden our knowledge on current world events or extraordinary experiences etc. The main thing is to be consistent and never say never:)

Well, in my opinion, we could simply read more English books. Reading them does not mean simply enjoying the story, it also means discovering new words that you find interesting. Novels are great as they provide great storylines, and by reading them, you get ideas pretty quickly in your head. I recommend mysteries too as they nearly always have a twist at the end, which makes the readers feel surprise. You can learn the wonderful and creative phrases and a wide range of vocabulary through reading books. Hence,the best way to improve Free Writing is definitely reading. There may be other ways, but reading books is something you must do, or else it might be tough for you to improve.
I think that the best way to improve on our Paper 1 Free Writing is to prepare a list of characters and settings in our composition. We may have characters that are always cheerful, characters that are serious, etc.
Thus when we are doing a composition, we must think of a range of words to describe our characters, example: Words that we might see in story books, words that we might see in the newspapers, etc. All this words that we might see, we can put them together and form a sentence that is describing our characters.
Also, we must find the settings for the character we have created, maybe a school, a playground, etc. Then we can find a variety of phrases that can describe weathers, and put them together, which may then belongs to us. Example: We may see some words that describe raining, some phrases that describe thunder… Soon we get a few list of what is like in a rain. Thus we jumble up all these phrases together, and we get our own “rainy day” sentence.
So when we are doing a composition, we just put in our characters, our settings etc. and it will be something like completing a jigsaw puzzle.
Thus, when we get the whole composition done, we can have more time to check for our grammar mistakes and sentence structure, etc.

To read with an understanding, firstly is to know the meaning of the words not understood. Secondly is being able to explain the words verbally in proper English. By this one can understand the story easily and be able to learn more vocabularies. One would also have to use the words learned as frequently as possible or the effort put in would just be a waste of time.

In order to improve my English, i think that to me, reading is the best choice. It will help me a lot in my paper 1, free writing section. Because by reading, I could improve in my vocabularies and also my sentences structure. When we read, we will definitely come across a word or two that we do not know. If I am really attracted to that word, or it arouses my curiosity, I will go check it out in the dictionary. The other way was maybe marking other people's passage. By checking other people's work, we can easily spot their mistakes, and improve on our self but if I were to check my own writing, I doubt I will check it seriously. So checking on other's help myself to watch out what are the mistakes that are usually made by students.

To get to know more words, we can also start from knowing a basic word and check up the thesaurus to know the synonyms of the word, so that we will get to use a more bombastic word of the same meaning. We can also use the words when speaking in our daily lives to get use to writing it down. There are alot of methods to improve our P1, this is just one of it.

And while reading a passage,article or book, we would definitely come across some good phrases and words that we can use for our essay. We should write such phrases and words in a notebook, so that we can refer to it when needed. This can be another method to use. And such method can help widen our vocabulary, which lets us describe a scene or character better.
I think that the best way to improve our paper 1 is by reading. This does not only mean storybooks. In fact, I think that as long as we read anything it helps us to improve our language and we also absorb other information too. These information, if appropriate, can be used in paper 1 too.

Thirdly, we should check for grammatical errors. I think that the most easiest way to identify these errors is by using our rulers to concentrate on each sentence and check. This makes our mistakes more visible to our eyes, thus preventing us to lose marks unnecessarily.
In my opinion, to improve on our Paper 1 Free Writing, we definitely need to known a wide range of different varieties of vocabulary. But the main point is how do we get to do that task which seemed pretty easy on the superficial level, but is actually an extremely tough job? This links to another point, that is to increasing our capacity for more new and profound words and phrases.
Means like reading storybooks or novels of a slightly advanced level also works, but i would prefer having conversations with people that have a great understanding of the English language, who uses profound vocabulary in their daily speech as easily as breathing. This way, i would more or less pick up a few profound words that i do not know of and search those words up in the dictionary.
But Of course, there definitely are other methods to increase our capacity, like searching the dictionary for profound adjectives and writing them down into a notebook with descriptions of the word and revising them before the examinations, and using them in our daily speech as well.
Basically, practice makes perfect, and if we are devoted to learning english, or any other subjects of interest, we will crave for more. That is what i personally believe in.
I feel that Free writing is actually an easy task if you put the effort into remembering good vocabulary phrases and improve your grammar skills. For me, before every essay test or exam, i'll read through essay books to get more ideas on how to write my essays and also i;ll remember good vocabulary phrases. By doing this, your essays will definitely be more interesting than others.
I come from an English speaking family and my parents encourage me to read novels. i feel that it really helps as it increases your understanding towards English words. I believe that each and everyone of us have an equal chance of scoring well for our paper 1 if we want to. And to do this, we have to motivate ourselves to read and speak more.
From what I believed, I think that the most efficient way to improve free writing skills is to read up some model essays and analyze it thoroughly; finding out why would the author able to write so well and why I could not. This will help me to identify where is my weak spot that made me unable to achieve that kind of marks. Reading also helped to improve our vocabulary banks which we could effectively in essays to improve the grade of the essay by using those words that we used. However, even we read lots of resources but we did not use it wisely, it would not have a much effective on improving our standard of writing; in the worst scenario, making it worse.
In order to improve our paper1, we can read newspapers and books regularly. Only then we might encounter words that are more difficult and we do not understand. We can search the dictionary for those words and use them in our essays in the future. We can also listen to BBC radio and listen to how the English speaking countries communicate using their language skills. They also speak good vocab that many of us dont understand and unless we practice more, there is no way we can master it.
I believe that we can improve our essay writing by getting ourselves exposed to more essays written by others. By reading essays written by others, we can take note of the good points and vocab and try to apply it into our essay. But before we can do that, we must be sure what it meant, so that after that we can improve or change the sentence or vocab used into a better one. Of course, without practice comes no perfection, so should use it more often. Reading more also increases your chance to do well in paper 1, cause one may have come across similar topics to the topics tested in paper 1. Still, the best way to write an essay should be written down based on real life experience, since we knew how it feels like, it'll be easier and natural when writing the essay.
I think that we can improve our paper 1 by reading more storybooks or essays of others. In the process of reading, we could take down and check the difficult words that we do not understand and try to use it whenever we could. If you are consistent, and willing to work hard, you will definetly improve. This is what i think.
I think during the exams itself, we must be more careful in our choice of words and check if there are any careless mistakes.

As we all know that in order to score well for essay writing, you need to be strong in your vocabulary. I think the best way to improve my vocabulary would be to read lots and lots of storybooks and newspaper articles. For instance, The Straits Time and Readers Digest. Storybooks can not only help us with our vocabulary, it can also help us by being a form of inspiration.
Also, I feel that we can read up more model essays written by our seniors. The more we read, the better our vocabulary will be, since in the process of reading and analyzing their essays, we get to see words which we have never seen before. Hence, after reading and recording down those words, we would be able to use them in our own essays next time. =)
We also need to speak more fluent English so that the chances of making grammatical mistakes is minimal. Thank you!

Personally, I feel that the best way to improve our writing skills would be reading. Instead of only reading novels, why not read other types of articles and expose ourselves more to the different style of writing? This would include newspaper articles, essays written by other students, and even blogs. We can then take note of the various sentence structure, how the author began or ended his/her story, and also the wide range of vocabulary used.
Besides reading, we can also practise writing beforehand, and request for a teacher to help check and grade the essay. This way, we will be able to learn from our own mistakes, and avoid making the same mistake again in the future.
i feel that the way to improve our free writing essay is to read short stories from boks like reader's digest. it shows us how to write short but interesting stories which is needed in our essay also , we can use the phrases that we learn on our essays. this would help us to express ourselves better in our essay anf thus, will allow us to score more marks
There are many ways we can improve our English compos. For example, we can read more books such as readers digest or even composition books to improve our use of language .
Also, we should pay special attention to mistakes that can be avoided, such as spelling mistakes and punctuation errors.
We can also plan our essays in advance to ensure we do not spend a large amount of time thinking of the plot, or the characters name. This would give us more time to make sure we do not have spelling or any other errors.
Personally for me, I would sort of read up the dictionary whenever I am free and when I feel like it. :D After reading up, I would write down some words that I feel that during composition I would use. At the same time I will also read books of different genres to help improve my story writing. In the case of vocabulary, tenses, grammar and sentence structures problems, we would have to pay attention to the way we write and the way we speak too. how i want to improve my english paper 1 is by reading short articles and take down the words and phrases that i find is good to use for free-writing. if i come across words that im unsure of, i'll check out the dictionary and take the meaning down. some phrases of sentence is good at expressing something but the terms they use may not appeal to me and i'll change some of it. before free-writing, i'll take a look at the things i've taken down and read it again n again. i'll think about how and when to use the sentence or phrases during free-writing and look at articles to have a reference for how they express their idea. the sequence of their article and the sentences they formed. -Gigi
To improve my compositions, I would first start by reading others’ essays. I can learn at least a few new words and phrases that I can use in my essay in the future. There will definitely be new storyline that I have never read before of so they can help to improve the essays that I write. I will also learn of more ways to start and end my essays. Another method could be by first thinking about the characters that I am going to use. This enables me to have more time to check on my composition and find out the errors that I may make.

I think that improving grammar is the thing we have to do at this moment as grammar should be easier to improve on than vocabulary. In order to improve P1, i think the most important criteria is to widen our vocabulary skills. We will be able to learn more vocabularies if we read more articles, novels, essays, story books etc. We can also learn from authors, the way they phrase their sentence structure and also the way they use their vocabulary. Apart from vocabularies, grammar also takes up most of the marks. To improve our grammar, i think we can practise grammar in assessment books and even when we communicate. However, the format of P1 is also very important. I wouldn't want to lose marks due to the wrong format. Format is something that we can learn and memories. for us to improve on our paper1, i think that we shouldnt always read all those like comics or such, because they usually contain words that are sometimes not proper english. it may affect the way we write. i feel that we should come in contact with more "able-to-use-often" phrases, words that would "colour" our essay nicely. this way, it also allows us to secure great marks. sometimes, when you write a piece of essay, and you've put in your best to write it, at the end of the day, you'll feel great, because you get this feeling telling yourself "I've done my best, this is my essay, and I'm proud of it!" with this always in our head, i'm sure that it will help us to improve our paper1. -Calvin

I would think to improve our paper 1, we don't have to have a fantastic plot or something, but should use a wide range of vocab and phrases, and bring a story to life. To be able to do this, we could start by reading books or Times and Reader's Digest, or even Life. When we come across intersting words and phrases we would use and take the time to learn them, we can record it down in a small book and read thru it before an exam etc.
Mr Lam said there are many good words in there and this is more effective then to read thick books as we aren't trying to write a book for a compo during an exam. I'm not saying books aren't useful, 'cause books can give us many ideas on what to write, how to write and how to twist the plot etc. to make the story readable and the markers would be interested to read on.
A good compo can't just rely on pretty words and so, as you have to write in good english to make it readable and the markers will also understand what we're trying to say/write in the compo. To achieve being able to write good english, we have to speak good english. This can be easily done if we watch how we phrase our sentences and try our best to be grammatically correct.
I think that in order to improve our paper 1, we will first have to build up our foundation on grammar and vocabulary. This can be done by reading storybooks and essays of other writers. This would expose us to other types of writing methods and vocabulary. Speaking in good English will also affects us in the way we write. We could also design some characters and scenarios that we are most probably going to use before the exam. The other way was maybe marking other people's passage. By checking other people's work, we can easily spot their mistakes, and improve on our self but if I were to check my own writing, I doubt I will check it seriously. So checking on other's help myself to watch out what are the mistakes that are usually made by students.

I think that the easiest way to improve our P1 is to read more short novels to learn more words and phrases so that we can use them in our compositions. If we do not know the meanings of the words, we could check them up in the dictionary. We can also get ideas by reading good essays written by other people, so when we come across a similar topic, we will be able to vaguely recall how to conquer the topic if it is a difficult one. To get to know more words, we can also start from knowing a basic word and check up the thesaurus to know the synonyms of the word, so that we will get to use a more bombastic word of the same meaning. We can also use the words when speaking in our daily lives to get use to writing it down. There are alot of methods to improve our P1, this is just one of it.

I think there are a few ways to improve on our English Paper One, free writing.
ReplyDeleteOne such way is by reading, though is does not need to be a thick book. A short passage or article would be ideal as we would not be writing a 200 page assay like a book, but rather a 2 page essay.
And while reading a passage,article or book, we would definitely come across some good phrases and words that we can use for our essay. We should write such phrases and words in a notebook, so that we can refer to it when needed. This can be another method to use. And such method can help widen our vocabulary, which lets us describe a scene or character better.

I think that the best way to improve our paper 1 is by reading. This does not only mean storybooks. In fact, I think that as long as we read anything it helps us to improve our language and we also absorb other information too. These information, if appropriate, can be used in paper 1 too.
ReplyDeleteAnother reason to read any type of reading material is because each author has a unique style of writing. By reading a variety of styles of writing, we can acquire the different techniques of writing and apply them to our paper 1.
Thirdly, we should check for grammatical errors. I think that the most easiest way to identify these errors is by using our rulers to concentrate on each sentence and check. This makes our mistakes more visible to our eyes, thus preventing us to lose marks unnecessarily.

In my opinion, to improve on our Paper 1 Free Writing, we definitely need to known a wide range of different varieties of vocabulary. But the main point is how do we get to do that task which seemed pretty easy on the superficial level, but is actually an extremely tough job? This links to another point, that is to increasing our capacity for more new and profound words and phrases.
ReplyDeleteMeans like reading storybooks or novels of a slightly advanced level also works, but i would prefer having conversations with people that have a great understanding of the English language, who uses profound vocabulary in their daily speech as easily as breathing. This way, i would more or less pick up a few profound words that i do not know of and search those words up in the dictionary.
But Of course, there definitely are other methods to increase our capacity, like searching the dictionary for profound adjectives and writing them down into a notebook with descriptions of the word and revising them before the examinations, and using them in our daily speech as well.
Basically, practice makes perfect, and if we are devoted to learning english, or any other subjects of interest, we will crave for more. That is what i personally believe in.

I feel that Free writing is actually an easy task if you put the effort into remembering good vocabulary phrases and improve your grammar skills. For me, before every essay test or exam, i'll read through essay books to get more ideas on how to write my essays and also i;ll remember good vocabulary phrases. By doing this, your essays will definitely be more interesting than others.
ReplyDeleteI come from an English speaking family and my parents encourage me to read novels. i feel that it really helps as it increases your understanding towards English words. I believe that each and everyone of us have an equal chance of scoring well for our paper 1 if we want to. And to do this, we have to motivate ourselves to read and speak more.

From what I believed, I think that the most efficient way to improve free writing skills is to read up some model essays and analyze it thoroughly; finding out why would the author able to write so well and why I could not. This will help me to identify where is my weak spot that made me unable to achieve that kind of marks. Reading also helped to improve our vocabulary banks which we could effectively in essays to improve the grade of the essay by using those words that we used. However, even we read lots of resources but we did not use it wisely, it would not have a much effective on improving our standard of writing; in the worst scenario, making it worse.

In order to improve our paper1, we can read newspapers and books regularly. Only then we might encounter words that are more difficult and we do not understand. We can search the dictionary for those words and use them in our essays in the future. We can also listen to BBC radio and listen to how the English speaking countries communicate using their language skills. They also speak good vocab that many of us dont understand and unless we practice more, there is no way we can master it.
ReplyDeleteI believe that we can improve our essay writing by getting ourselves exposed to more essays written by others. By reading essays written by others, we can take note of the good points and vocab and try to apply it into our essay. But before we can do that, we must be sure what it meant, so that after that we can improve or change the sentence or vocab used into a better one. Of course, without practice comes no perfection, so should use it more often. Reading more also increases your chance to do well in paper 1, cause one may have come across similar topics to the topics tested in paper 1. Still, the best way to write an essay should be written down based on real life experience, since we knew how it feels like, it'll be easier and natural when writing the essay.

I think that we can improve our paper 1 by reading more storybooks or essays of others. In the process of reading, we could take down and check the difficult words that we do not understand and try to use it whenever we could. If you are consistent, and willing to work hard, you will definetly improve. This is what i think.

ReplyDeleteAs we all know that in order to score well for essay writing, you need to be strong in your vocabulary. I think the best way to improve my vocabulary would be to read lots and lots of storybooks and newspaper articles. For instance, The Straits Time and Readers Digest. Storybooks can not only help us with our vocabulary, it can also help us by being a form of inspiration.
Also, I feel that we can read up more model essays written by our seniors. The more we read, the better our vocabulary will be, since in the process of reading and analyzing their essays, we get to see words which we have never seen before. Hence, after reading and recording down those words, we would be able to use them in our own essays next time. =)
We also need to speak more fluent English so that the chances of making grammatical mistakes is minimal. Thank you!

Personally, I feel that the best way to improve our writing skills would be reading. Instead of only reading novels, why not read other types of articles and expose ourselves more to the different style of writing?
ReplyDeleteThis would include newspaper articles, essays written by other students, and even blogs. We can then take note of the various sentence structure, how the author began or ended his/her story, and also the wide range of vocabulary used.
Besides reading, we can also practise writing beforehand, and request for a teacher to help check and grade the essay. This way, we will be able to learn from our own mistakes, and avoid making the same mistake again in the future.

There are many ways we can improve our English compos. For example, we can read more books such as readers digest or even composition books to improve our use of language .

We can also plan our essays in advance to ensure we do not spend a large amount of time thinking of the plot, or the characters name. This would give us more time to make sure we do not have spelling or any other errors.

Personally for me, I would sort of read up the dictionary whenever I am free and when I feel like it. :D After reading up, I would write down some words that I feel that during composition I would use. At the same time I will also read books of different genres to help improve my story writing. In the case of vocabulary, tenses, grammar and sentence structures problems, we would have to pay attention to the way we write and the way we speak too. This is because, we sometimes write down what we say everyday. :D That is all I have. Haha xD

how i want to improve my english paper 1 is by reading short articles and take down the words and phrases that i find is good to use for free-writing.
ReplyDeleteif i come across words that im unsure of, i'll check out the dictionary and take the meaning down.
some phrases of sentence is good at expressing something but the terms they use may not appeal to me and i'll change some of it.
before free-writing, i'll take a look at the things i've taken down and read it again n again.
i'll think about how and when to use the sentence or phrases during free-writing and look at articles to have a reference for how they express their idea.

To improve my compositions, I would first start by reading others’ essays. I can learn at least a few new words and phrases that I can use in my essay in the future. There will definitely be new storyline that I have never read before of so they can help to improve the essays that I write. I will also learn of more ways to start and end my essays.

In order to improve the free writing,I think the most important thing is to read widely.Read different kind of books and articles from different writers .As long as something that can help in my English language,i need to explore more.when I read, I can learn more new vocabularies which will definitely help in my free writing.Other than that,I can also learn the gramma and the ways that different writers start and end their articles.The more I read,the better idea I get.In my opinion, the free writing is to generalise what I have read.That makes much easier for me to write.

As we were all taught that building up our vocabulary could help us in getting a higher score, I think that we could read more books, or even reading a dictionary, could help us in that too. Reading widely can even aids in creating a character we could use for 'O' level, the more books we read, the more characteristics of a character we could learn. Secondly, I think we could read some sample composition, learning how those authors express their ideas, how they have their sentence structure formed. This would enable us to improve our English paper one.

I think that improving grammar is the thing we have to do at this moment as grammar should be easier to improve on than vocabulary. If grammar were to be improved, vocabulary could be improved through reading magazines like TIME. Reading essays could also be one of the ways to improve grammar and vocabulary. Reading more of others' essay, could improve our vocabulary as we can use some of the good descriptive words, good sentence or good plot. Also, the way others paragraghed their eassy is also what we need to learn. The way how authors express their feelings and ideas through any sources, we should try and learn from them. I think that reading essays will be a good way to improve our vocabulary. In those essays, i believe that we will be able to discover phrases and vocabulary which will improve on our description in our composition. By writing it out onto our exercise book, will help us to memorise it easier. For words that we do not understand, we should check out the dictionary immediately and write it down as well. Also, we will get different ideas on how to plot our compositions. As for grammer, i think that by taking extra notice while speaking or writing will help. Through this, i believe that our paper 1, free-writing will be improve.

In order to improve P1, i think the most important criteria is to widen our vocabulary skills. We will be able to learn more vocabularies if we read more articles, novels, essays, story books etc. We can also learn from authors, the way they phrase their sentence structure and also the way they use their vocabulary. Apart from vocabularies, grammar also takes up most of the marks. To improve our grammar, i think we can practise grammar in assessment books and even when we communicate. However, the format of P1 is also very important. I wouldn't want to lose marks due to the wrong format. Format is something that we can learn and memories. Thus, before an exam, we must make sure that we memorised the whole format of P1. Through this way, i think my skills for P1 would definitely improve.

for us to improve on our paper1, i think that we shouldnt always read all those like comics or such, because they usually contain words that are sometimes not proper english. it may affect the way we write. i feel that we should come in contact with more "able-to-use-often" phrases, words that would "colour" our essay nicely. this way, it also allows us to secure great marks. sometimes, when you write a piece of essay, and you've put in your best to write it, at the end of the day, you'll feel great, because you get this feeling telling yourself "I've done my best, this is my essay, and I'm proud of it!" with this always in our head, i'm sure that it will help us to improve our paper1.

I would think to improve our paper 1, we don't have to have a fantastic plot or something, but should use a wide range of vocab and phrases, and bring a story to life.
ReplyDeleteTo be able to do this, we could start by reading books or Times and Reader's Digest, or even Life. When we come across intersting words and phrases we would use and take the time to learn them, we can record it down in a small book and read thru it before an exam etc.
Mr Lam said there are many good words in there and this is more effective then to read thick books as we aren't trying to write a book for a compo during an exam.
I'm not saying books aren't useful, 'cause books can give us many ideas on what to write, how to write and how to twist the plot etc. to make the story readable and the markers would be interested to read on.
A good compo can't just rely on pretty words and so, as you have to write in good english to make it readable and the markers will also understand what we're trying to say/write in the compo. To achieve being able to write good english, we have to speak good english. This can be easily done if we watch how we phrase our sentences and try our best to be grammatically correct.

ReplyDeleteI think that in order to improve our paper 1, we will first have to build up our foundation on grammar and vocabulary. This can be done by reading storybooks and essays of other writers. This would expose us to other types of writing methods and vocabulary. Speaking in good English will also affects us in the way we write. We could also design some characters and scenarios that we are most probably going to use before the exam. This will allow us to save time and make sure that our characters and environment is correct. This would allow us to know that we had already secured the marks in examinations.
