Our friendship was not steady from the start. We had many disagreements and just one more argument would destroy the rocky friendship we had. I did not have to wait long for it to happen.
One day both of us were called out of class. We were told that we were chosen to represent the school in an essay writing competition. But there was only one spot, only one of us could take that spot. The teacher left it to us to decide who would take part. We both decided to discuss it after school.
Immediately after school, we started our argument. Darryl argued that he was the better writer between the two of us. But I argued that I was more careful and not prone to making mistakes. We stared at each other in the eye. We could see the fire in each other’s eyes. Suddenly, Darryl took a step towards me, and with his finger prodding my chest he said
“You just want to do this because you want to impress Jean that’s all!”
“Oh yeah? You just want to show everyone that you’re the best writer in class that’s all!” I replied angrily.
“Fine! Go impress your girlfriend!” sneered Darryl as he walked off.
“Ha! I win loser!” I shouted back.
After Darryl left, I felt a sense of achievement as I had beat my rival to the spot in the competition. I felt proud of myself, but that feeling did not last long. I did not realize that our friendship had been destroyed. Darryl never spoke to me again and neither did I. by that time, regret had overcome me. Whenever I looked back, I still treasured that friendship, no matter how rocky, over the chance to represent the school. I was sad to lose a friend and I fully regretted arguing with him so many times.
